The PLA’s chair, Mathew Ditchburn, has cast a sceptical eye over the government’s proposed rental auction scheme for vacant high street premises, a policy that appeared in the Queen’s Speech.
“This will give local government enormous power over commercial properties in which they have no legal interest, and the ability to interfere in a free market with scant regard to the fact that many properties are vacant due to lack of current demand … Forcing a property owner to contract with an occupier it has not chosen may result in poor management of our high streets, an inappropriate mix of occupiers in any given location and a strained landlord and tenant relationship from the outset …”
